Background: Came from Chinese-speaking family. Took Higher Chinese since primary school. Achieved A* in PSLE, A1 with a Distinction in oral for O Level Chinese, A2 with a Distinction in oral for O Level Higher Chinese and A for JC2 mid-year and prelims Chinese Language and Literature. Tutoring experience: Taught Chinese to students aged 7-14 at Filos Community Services for around 1.5 years in Junior College. Teaching methodology: 1. Story-telling I believe that students need to be interested in the subject in order to excel. To allow students to enjoy learning Chinese, I usually teach them about the background of the word or phrase. This not only allow them to know more about Chinese culture, traditions and beliefs, it also allow them to visualise the words better and strengthen their memory. 2. Drawing (more applicable to kindergarten and primary school) By utilising drawing, which most students would enjoy, it allows them to further understand the relation between a word or components in a Chinese character and meaning. 3. Spelling and synthesis Through spelling exercises and synthesis, it would allow students to utilise the knowledge they have learnt in class in their work. This assessment allows me to know better about the students' understanding and memory work. 4. Command of language I would conduct my lessons in Chinese and encourage students to respond in Chinese as well. To improve their command of the language, I would give them 'fun' assignments, such as creating presentations about themselves and things they like and ask them to create a Chinese book / movie review and present it to me. This allows them to expand their vocabulary and improve their conversational Chinese skills.
