Through these experiences, I have developed a nuanced teaching pedagogy that focuses on three main principles: understanding before memorisation, active participation, and structured reinforcement. Firstly, I greatly prioritise conceptual understanding. When helping others, I avoid simply solving the question for them. Instead, I break the complex ideas into smaller parts and explain the reasoning behind each step. I believe students learn more effectively when they understand the “why” behind a concept rather than memorising procedures mechanically. I often use simple analogies or real-life examples to make abstract ideas more relatable. Secondly, I encourage active participation. Rather than speaking continuously, I always ask guiding questions to check for understanding. I may ask them to explain a concept back to me in their own words or attempt a similar question independently. Thirdly, I emphasise structured practice and feedback. After explaining a concept, I provide practice questions of varying difficulty levels. I observe how the student approaches each question to identify gaps in understanding. In addition, I adapt my teaching style based on the student’s pace and learning preferences. For example, some students might benefit more from visual explanations, while others could respond better to step-by-step written breakdowns.
