Then, keeping his or her individual learning profile, interests and needs in mind, lessons are planned to reach learning goals.Multisensory methods and approaches proven to be effective in teaching are used. For example, the Concrete, pictorial, abstract (CPA) approach is very useful in building a solid foundation in math. In the Concrete Stage, lots of hands on real world experiences are offered such as cutting play dough pies to learn fractions. Next, the child is shown how the concrete can be translated into visuals and we start to draw fractions to visualise and convert mixed numbers to improper fractions. Lastly, in the abstract stage, we use mental shortcuts to convert a mixed number to improper fractions after the child is taught the mechanics of the shortcut and how it relates to their previous experiences in the earlier stages of CPA. Using CPA, we can witness the children progressing in their understanding of concepts they previously struggle with.Besides the above, fun and rapport with the teacher are also fundamental in successful learning. Hence, games are incorporated into lessons and a safe environment for learning is carefully built by the teacher being kind, friendly and flexible. This helps to alleviate the child's anxiety and stress which frees up their brain to learn instead of worrying about not being able to catch up.
