Tutor’s Teaching Background

I hold a PhD in Computer Science, where the work was mathematical rather than applied — graph grammars, formal rule-based systems, and proof-based reasoning. Alongside that, fifteen years of professional engineering has kept me working with calculus, statistics and probability rather than remembering them. For a JC2 student this close to A-Levels, my first job is finding out where the marks are actually going. H2 Maths tends to fail in a few distinct places, and they need different work: algebraic fluency that has not kept up with the content, so questions are understood but not completed; Statistics, where students who are strong in Pure Maths often lose ground because the reasoning is different in kind; techniques that are known but not fast enough under timed conditions; and presentation, where correct working loses method marks. I would rather spend the first lesson diagnosing that than assume it. Teaching background: around five years of tuition experience, including a Secondary 4 O-Level Maths class of four at a tuition centre in Yuhua CC, and 1-to-1 work with primary and secondary students. That was some years ago, so I am working through the current SEAB H2 syllabus and recent past papers so my teaching matches present exam requirements rather than my own study era.
